  • White three rail fence

Q: What do I need to look out for in terms of quality?
Ensuring you are combining quality materials with great design and skilled construction will contribute to an overall quality result.

Using the proper materials and professional installation, will ensure a straight, level and sturdy fence – one that will stand the test of time and give you the peace of mind in your investment.

Q: How do I decide on the sort of fence for my property?
With all the options that are available deciding can be confusing – it’s not something that most people do every day – and, of course, you want to make a smart buying decision.  The main things to consider are:

    • style, materials and finishing options and your budget
    • any construction or installation issues – will there be other requirements or costs involved?
    • DIY or using experienced contractors – engaging a reputable company for your project is the surest way to get the best advice and help with design, materials and any on-site issues

Q: How long does the project usually take to be completed?
Depending on the size of your project – most fences are installed within a few days. An organised contractor will have everything ready prior to starting your job. They will also include in your quotation the timeframe for completion – making sure you have confirmed dates for the start and finish of your project.

Q: Can I save money by doing the preparation myself?
Naturally, anything you can do to assist in the process will reduce your costs. So things like removing the existing fence or clearing trees and shrubs that may be in the way of the new one will all help with the overall costs. Although, we find most people don’t have the necessary tools or time for this – so we can provide a project completed from preparation to installation for you.

Q: What colour options do I have?
Colour options depend on the type and style you are looking for, with timber fences you have the option of leaving the wood natural or either painting or staining it. Metal fencing – aluminium and steel - mostly come pre-finished in a range of colours depending on the material. With wrought iron – these can be galvanised or powder coated in a variety of colours.

Q: How much will my fences cost?
Styles, sizes, materials and finishes vary so much it is hard to estimate with any degree of accuracy what the costs will be without being able to see your property. It's a bit like choosing a car; some people will go for the no-frills manual version, which gets them from A-to-B. Others will settle for nothing less than the luxury automatic model with the leather seats and all the bells and whistles. Costs will depend on your taste, property style and your budget.

You may also choose a combination of styles depending on the amount of fencing you need – we are seeing more and more customers combine fence types and materials to achieve the look they want within their budget. For example - to enhance curbside appeal if you have a classically styled home you may opt for custom designed picket fences on your front boundary. For less prominent side or rear boundaries where a practical standard paling design might suffice, which can be helpful if sharing costs with neighbours.

    Q: Where can I put a fence?
Regarding the location - you need to be sure you have the actual property boundary clearly marked. Making sure the positioning is correct sounds obvious, but mistakes can happen. If you are using an existing fence-line as a guide, it may not have been originally built on the actual boundary - so double checking is wise to avoid any problems.
With a new property, the boundary pegs should be clearly visible - with an older property things sometimes aren't as clear cut. If there is any doubt getting the property surveyed might be the best solution - you don't want to have to relocate it later. We suggest if you need assistance to consult your Council.

    Q: Do I need a building consent?
Not normally for residential situations - unless you are building beyond the permitted height for your area (generally 2-2.5m). Although, we recommend checking with the Council prior to commencing any work to clarify the current rules for your property, as there may be instances where you will need a consent.  You do need a consent though for fencing associated with a spa or swimming pool. Talking with the Auckland City Council is prudent whatever your plans are, as they do enforce the regulations so it's best to be cautious and avoid any costly mistakes. Naturally, even if you do not need a consent you still need to ensure that any work complies with the Building Code - which is why it is important to work with a professional fencing contractor.

Q: Do I need to consult with my neighbours?
Yes, this is a good idea. You certainly have the right to erect new fences on common boundaries, or to replace existing ones that need upgrading. But you need to consider your neighbour's rights as well. It’s common sense to talk with everyone concerned before you do anything - especially if you want them to contribute to the cost. It’s best to work out the details of the type, materials, costs involved, etc. before the work starts. It's recommended to put your terms in writing and have all parties sign off on them. Key areas to get agreement on are:

    • confirm the boundary/s to be fenced (most people have several neighbours, having signed agreements for each boundary is advisable)
    • fence type - style, materials, finish i.e. painted, stained, left natural
    • are you doing the preparation and building work yourself or is there a contractor involved
    • costs - are there several quotes involved i.e. the total job, materials only, labour separate, etc. - and who is paying for what and when
    • expected start date and time for completion of the project

The New Zealand Fencing Act 1978 provides information on getting your neighbours to contribute to the costs. Remember though that what they think is adequate may not be your ideal - so a compromise may be required.
